Optical fiber sensing is a cutting-edge technology that utilizes optical fibers as sensors to detect and measure various physical and environmental parameters. These sensors rely on the principle of changes in light intensity or wavelength to gather precise and real-time data. Typical applications of optical fiber sensing include structural health monitoring of buildings, bridges, and pipelines, environmental monitoring for detecting temperature, pressure, and humidity, and in the oil and gas industry for detecting leaks and monitoring pipeline integrity.

To meet the demands of this fast-expanding applications-driven market, we have organized this Technology Meeting to discuss about the latest developments and the most recent application opportunities. Apart from the advancements in instrumentation, applications and technology integration, we will also discuss the current challenges, business impacts and future requirements for this technology.

Alexis Mendez received a PhD. degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, USA in 1992. He is president of MCH Engineering LLC - a consulting firm specializing in optical fiber sensing technology.
Dr. Mendez is a Fellow of SPIE and was past Chairman of the 2006 International Optical Fiber Sensors Conference (OFS-18), past Technical Chair of the 2nd Workshop on Specialty Optical Fibers and their Applications (WSOF-2). He is also VP of the IEEE Fiber Sensors Standards Committee, and co-editor of the “Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook”, and co-author of SPIE’s “Fiber Optical Sensors Book”.

Eric Lindner (CEO) holds a PhD in Physics from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. During his research in fiber optics, he worked on special types of FBGs for many different application fields. He joined FBGS as a project engineer in 2008. In 2012 he became responsible for the development and production of DTG®s. He became CEO in 2015, driving since then the development of the company. Eric is co-author of 5+ patents and 40+ scientific publications.

Gonzalo Guadaño (CEO) has 17 years of experience in the development of advanced laser processing systems and R&D machinery. He has served as Chief Officer at LASING since 2009, where he leads a team of experts in laser technology, robotics, motion control, and artificial vision. Under his leadership, the company specializes in creating precision laser processing solutions, including specialized machinery for battery R&D. Gonzalo began his tenure at the company as a Laser Systems Engineer, focusing on the technical integration of complex optical and electronic components. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Automatic and Electronic Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a Master’s degree in Photonics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Didier Beghuin (BLO) is heading the Life Science and Industry activities for Lambda-X Verhaert High-Tech. He has been involved in optical developments since 2000. He developed metrology instrumentation for the ophthalmic industry, sighting systems for defense, and a series of custom microscopes for the biomedical sector. Being involved in space activities, he also led optical imaging or metrology developments for Earth observation or microgravity science. He is now mainly developing products for Biotechnologies, Diagnostics, Medtech, and food-related applications.

Jean Berney (Group Leader Laser Tech) is a physicist with a PhD in Photonics from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland). He is the founder of multiple deep tech start-ups and has notably created Attolight, a company that provides nano-meter resolution spectroscopy instruments to the semi-conductor industry and Deeplight, a company that provides PIC-based lasers for sensing applications. He is a director at Freeptyc and the inventor of its technology. Jean leads the Laser Technologies group at CSEM, a role he has held since 2024.

Per Karlsson (CEO) graduated from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in 1994 with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He started his career by joining Toshiba in Japan where he worked with design of manufacturing equipment for the semiconductor industry. Prior to co-founding Northlab Photonics in 2008, he served as a Business Development Manager, Product Manager, and Vice President for Sales and Marketing with Ericsson from 1998 to 2005. His expertise was then tapped by Accture Technologies in 2005 where he acted as president until 2008 when he co-founded Northlab Photonics, a fast-growing company focused on products and services for the photonics and fiber optics industry.

Andy Gillooly (Business Development Manager) is responsible for business development at Fibercore Limited and has been with the company for 14 years. His focus is on identifying and driving the company forward into newly emerging markets and working closely with the customers to ensure their needs are met from the outset. Prior to Fibercore, Andy was at Sharp Laboratories of Europe designing camera lenses, SPI Lasers developing pulsed fiber lasers has a PhD in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) from Aston University, UK.

Andrey Voloshin (Senior Technologist) leads Hamamatsu Photonics Pilot Line since 2024. This customer- and application-oriented service fuses Hamamatsu Photonics strengths (light emitters, detectors/spectrometers and optical building blocks) with electronics and firmware to deliver market-ready, scalable photonic modules. Andrey is also part of the Corporate Venture Capital team, building collaborations and synergies between startups and the company. An expert in optoelectronics and integrated photonics, his track record spans photonic sensing systems, ultra-low-noise PIC-based lasers and optical frequency combs.

Antonio has a PhD from the department of applied physics of Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in laser processing of glassy samples. In Madrid, he made a postdoctoral stay at the Instituto de Óptica of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), where he worked on the fabrication of nanostructures with dielectric and metallic materials via pulsed laser deposition. In 2010, Antonio entered the world of distribution as a sales engineer in the photonics department of the company Acal BFi, a job that he continued in the Spanish company Grupo Álava since 2012. In the latter, he was responsible for sales and marketing for Spain and Portugal of different laser systems, optical and optomechanical components, optical metrology equipment and other nano-characterization devices. In 2021 he became US sales manager for the company Fyla, a manufacturer of supercontinuum and ultrafast fiber lasers, for the development of the market in this country and the establishment of new relationships with the most relevant research centers in the world of optics and photonics. At EPIC, Antonio is supporting the technical needs of our growing membership as well as the EU-funded initiatives.

David de Felipe Mesquida (Senior Project Manager) has been contributing his expertise at Fraunhofer HHI since 2011. He holds a Doctor of Engineering in Photonics Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin (2019), a Master of Engineering in Telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (2010), and a Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications from the University of the Balearic Islands (2007). Edgar Mendoza leads the technology and business strategy vision for Redondo Optics, with over thirty years of experience as a senior executive, strategic business development, and technology innovation in fast-growth star-up companies focus on emerging markets in aviation & aerospace, smart structures, renewable energy, life sciences, oil & gas, and defense and security. Ed received his Ph.D. from the City University of New York with focus on the development of photosensitive glasses for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) microchip applications. Currently works in fields ranging from fiber optics sensors, silicon photonics, smart wearable fabrics, remote sensing, Lab-on-Chip opto-fluidics, diffractive and refractive optics, and nanomaterials.
Elisenda Lara (Marketing Manager) studied Media and Communication at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and has been working in content marketing for more than ten years. She started her career in audio-visual media working as a cultural reporter, then jumped into the e-commerce sector, and before joining EPIC she has contributed to the dissemination of photonics through an association of the sector.

Jordi Sobrino (Key Account Optoelectronics) has over 15 years of experience at Hamamatsu, where he has held roles in sales engineering, business development, project management, and key account leadership. Since 2018, he has served as Key Account Manager, driving growth and supporting customers with advanced optoelectronic solutions. Jordi holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from UPF Barcelona School of Management, and a Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
Juan José Martínez (CTO) has worked in multiple fields of research in photonics and optics from 2005, when he started his PhD studies at University of Zaragoza. He has participated in more than 10 public founded projects (both Autonomic, National and European founded programs) first as a researcher and later as director and coordinator. Either in universities, research centers or private companies, his expertise has always been linked to the world of photonics for multidisciplinary applications: optical communications, distributed fibre sensing, POF, free space optical metrology, optics solution for Concentrated Solar Power Generation, Brillouin Spectroscopy, non-linear optical effects. After the completion of his PhD in optical communications in 2011 from University of Zaragoza, he successfully directed and completed a metrology project at University of South Wales (UK), in 2016, he started working for a private company where he continued to apply his acquired knowledge from university R&D to the creation and improvement of high-profile optical measurement products. As a senior researcher he has tens of published papers both in journals and conferences and is part of several industrial properties, all related to optics and photonics.

Kemal Shafak (Head of Timing Technology) received his M.Sc. degree in Photonics from the University of Jena in 2012 and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Hamburg in 2017. During his graduate studies, he served as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena and at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg. His doctoral research demonstrated the feasibility of attosecond-level timing distribution and synchronization of optical and microwave sources over kilometer-scale distances using ultrafast lasers and optical fibers. In 2016, he joined Cycle GmbH, where he currently leads the product development of optical F&T systems as the Head of Timing Technology.

Kenny Hey Tow (Senior Researcher) received his Ph.D degree from the University of Rennes 1 in February 2013. His Ph.D research work, performed at FOTON laboratory in Lannion (France), was focused on developing Brillouin lasers, made from microstructured chalcogenide fibres, and the study of their noise properties. In 2013, he joined the Group for Fibre Optics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland as a postdoctoral researcher, where he led and carried research projects on specialty fibres for the development of new optical fibre sensors and laser sources. Since 2018, he is working at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden as a senior researcher and project manager, where he is leading R&D projects in the field of fibre-optic sensing and specialty fibres.

Lidia Briquets (Program Manager) has 10 years of experience in strategic commercial and corporate relationships management in the Photonics industry. She has experience in corporate and public relations and key account management, in a wide range of high-technologies industries related to photonics. At EPIC, as a Program Manager, she is responsible for the coordination of member-committee meetings and key activities, as well as working on the engagement of key contacts and stakeholders at various levels of organizations.

Marco Zanola (Technical Director) joined the AFE board in 2019, taking over the responsibility of maintaining and expanding the technology portfolio of AFE. He holds a PhD in optoelectronic engineering on the topic of photonic integrated circuits for tunable mm-wave generation. He has a background in technology R&D and covered various scientific roles in leading universities (University of Pavia and University of Glasgow) and large corporation research labs (Sharp Laboratories of Europe). He is passionate about photonics and technology in general, over the years he developed a broad experience in optical systems and optical sensing for a variety of industries and applications. He led several hi-tech projects from conception to commercialization, for different applications and across all TRL stages.

Nicholas White (Lead Technical Account Manager) is the lead technical account manager responsible for European customers and their optical fiber sensing projects. He achieved a master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Bath then started his career as an analytical scientist in a water testing laboratory, latterly moving into a customer-facing role at a R&D consultancy whilst continuing to utilize his technical skills. Nick joined Fibercore in 2017 and works with our customers and the development team on key projects in the Aerospace & Defence, Biomedical, Energy and Industrial sectors.

Per Karlsson (CEO) graduated from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in 1994 with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He started his career by joining Toshiba in Japan where he worked with design of manufacturing equipment for the semiconductor industry. Prior to co-founding Northlab Photonics in 2008, he served as a Business Development Manager, Product Manager, and Vice President for Sales and Marketing with Ericsson from 1998 to 2005. His expertise was then tapped by Accture Technologies in 2005 where he acted as president until 2008 when he co-founded Northlab Photonics, a fast-growing company focused on products and services for the photonics and fiber optics industry.

Richard Hendel (Head of Global Sales, Photonics Division) brings 30 years of leadership experience to G&H (Gooch & Housego), where he oversees worldwide commercial strategy. Since mid-2025, he has directed the division’s global sales efforts, following a tenure as European Sales Director. His previous leadership roles include Head of Business Development at Laserline GmbH, Director of EMEA System Sales at Coherent Inc., and VP of Sales at SPI Lasers. Richard also spent over a decade at COHERENT-ROFIN, managing international accounts and product lines across China, India, and the USA. He holds a Degree in Engineering in Precision Engineering, Production, and Automation from the Munich University of Applied Sciences.

Simon Viets (Director Business Development) graduated as a Graduate Engineer in Microsystems Engineering from the City University of Applied Sciences Bremen. He spent over 12 years at TRIOPTICS GmbH, moving from an R&D Engineer to Head of Customer Service, Head of Quality Management, and ultimately Deputy Head of Sales. He later spent nearly four years at Automation Engineering Inc. (AEi) as Director of Sales for Europe, China, and Southeast Asia. In January 2022, he joined ficonTEC Service GmbH as Director of Global Business Development. Additionally, he is an entrepreneur, having co-founded SCRAMBLUX GmbH in 2023 to provide LiDAR sensor test and calibration solutions for the automotive industry.

Sy Dat (Fiber Optics Technology Leader) holds a PhD in Optics/Optical Sciences from Université de Rennes I and an MSc in Computer Science and Network Engineering from Waseda University. He began his career as a Technical Support Engineer at Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication Group before transitioning into research roles at Waseda University, CNRS, Orange, and ENSSAT/FOTON. After working as an R&D Engineer at SensUp, he joined Airbus in 2017. He served as a Fiber Optics Specialist for five years before being promoted to Fiber Optics Technology Task Leader in 2022, where he currently heads R&T strategy and represents Airbus in international standardization committees.

Thibaut Detroux (Head of Product Strategy & Business Development) holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Liège, followed by postdoctoral research at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Thomas Ladstätter (Senior Business Development Manager) is responsible for industry cooperations and business development at the Sensor Division of SAL in Villach/Austria. He holds a master degree in environmental system sciences of the Karl-Franzens- University Graz. In the last years, he supported ESA and other projects in the field of laser ignition systems for rocket engines, as well as working on business cases and application scenarios for photonic technologies.

Thomas Paul (VP Market Manager Aerospace) completed his Master’s Degree in Chemistry at University College London with a thesis on surface reactions on interstellar dust grains. He then continued his studies at ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich and obtained his Ph.D. in ultra-high resolution VUV laser spectroscopy of atomic and molecular Rydberg states. After working as Project Manager for excimer laser development at Carl Zeiss and as Group Leader Sensor Technologies at ABB Corporate Research he received an MBA from the University of St. Gallen and joined HUBER+SUHNER. Today he is responsible for Strategy and Business Development of the firm’s Aerospace business.

Tobias Klafka (Head of R&D) studied physics in Hamburg and Paris. During his PhD at University of Hamburg, he specialized in quantum optics. In 2022 he joined Schäfter+Kirchhoff as a lead quantum physicist for research and development. He recently took over the responsibility for the entire development work of the three product lines.

Wladick Hartmann (Co-Founder & CTO) received his PhD from the University of Muenster in 2020 on the topic of “On-Chip Integrated Broadband Spectrometers Based on Tailored Disorder” with Prof. Wolfram Pernice. During the course of his PhD, Wladick was directly involved in developing the technology, which he and his co-founders are leveraging now at Pixel Photonics. Prior to his PhD, Wladick was already working as a Master student on superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors with Wolfram Pernice at KIT, where he was instrumental in the development of this technology. Together with his colleagues he co-founded Pixel Photonics in 2020.
