Although most quantum applications are still over a decade away, the following segments provide some concrete opportunities for photonics.
Main segments are:
- Quantum communication: Ultra-secure communication required for networks, defence & security, IoT & 5G, Banking, and e-mobility sectors
- Quantum computing: Photonic or superconductor quantum computers are going towards industrialisation. These systems are highly relevant for powerful simulations, pharma and drugs creation, banking, e-mobility.
- Quantum sensing: Quantum sensors are being used already, and advanced photonics are pushing this field toward smaller, robust and ultra-efficient quantum sensors. Quantum sensors are indispensable for navigation, timing, metrology, security & defence, ultra-high resolution imaging, spectroscopy and much more.
- Microwave photonics can replace conventional microwave technology for low interference and compact systems.
