Current clinical techniques usually involve sampling by specialised personnel, transport of the sample to a laboratory, and the use of time-consuming processes which delay the diagnosis for several days and hinder the evaluation of a disease in big groups. The still on-going Covid-19 crisis is showing the need for cost-effective, real-time and user-friendly detection methods, able to provide a fast diagnosis which would improve the patient prognosis and disease prevention.
In this EPIC online technology meeting, we will present different alternatives and European capabilities for the development of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) biosensors for virus detection including chip design, fabrication, packaging and biofunctionalisation of the sensor surface.
