VCSELs are no longer just for data centers. Now, with new materials, VCSELs can be used for detection of select gases, as Quantum Clocks for Position, Navigation, & Timing (PNT), for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), select high power applications, and even LiDAR – all while retaining their very small size and low price point. VCSELs shine in Satellite and Space implementations – in part due to their favorable SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) characteristics. VCSELs also excel in Neuromorphic Computing, classifying images quickly, which will be crucial for safe Autonomous Driving. Above applications will be presented by market report author Bruce Bateman.
Furthermore, VCSELs can be used very effectively for 3D Imaging and Image processing. The second presented report examines the different techniques to create a 3D image utilizing VCSELs. But arguably more interesting, is the way VCSELs can form Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) as an inexpensive platform for complex image classification. This optical solution is emerging as an attractive, fast, low power, and low cost neural network for neuromorphic computing. Additionally, this presentation identifies one more very promising application.
