The photonics industry is experiencing strong growth, with Research and Development (R&D) and manufacturing roles driving the highest demand. Data from the jobs-in-photonics.com website, that compiles the job offers from companies that are member of EPIC, shows over 330 R&D vacancies in the first half of 2025, highlighting innovation as the core of competitiveness in photonics.

Between January and June 2025, the photonics job market showed a clear trend: Europe and the United States remain the core regions where the industry is expanding. Germany alone offered nearly 900 positions, more than any other country. Finland and the United States lead with over 30 openings each, while the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany report more than 20 vacancies. Belgium, France, and Switzerland also contribute to the growing demand, demonstrating that R&D specialists are needed across Europe and North America.

Production and Operations Jobs on the Rise

After R&D, Production and Operations roles show the strongest demand. Process Engineers and Production Managers accumulated more than 200 vacancies each, with Germany, the United States, France, and Switzerland leading recruitment. This trend reflects the sector’s effort to expand production capacity and meet global photonics demand.

Project Management is another critical area, with over 200 job openings. Companies are not only increasing output but also professionalizing project execution and industrial processes, ensuring efficient scale-up.

Software Engineers Driving Digital Transformation

On the digital front, Software Engineers in Photonics stand out. Germany led the demand for this role, with almost 50 offers, while the United States, France, and the United Kingdom followed at a distance. This growth highlights the industry’s integration of AI, automation, and advanced simulation into photonics applications.

Quality Assurance Roles Gain Importance

Quality Engineers and Test Engineers are essential to maintaining reliability in photonics, especially in critical applications like healthcare and defense. According to data from the Jobs in Photonics website, companies in the United States posted over 30 Quality Engineer positions, while Germany and France each have more than 10 openings. The emphasis on quality reflects the sector’s commitment to high standards, compliance, and safe applications.

Sales and Business Development Opportunities

Finally, Sales Engineers, Applications Engineers, and Business Development professionals remain vital to the photonics ecosystem. Germany offers over 30 vacancies, with Switzerland and the United States following. These roles combine technical expertise with customer engagement, bridging complex technologies to market needs.
