Laser micromachining includes the different laser processes needed to produce structures with small sizes: cutting, drilling, surface texturing, additive manufacturing… Both precision and accuracy are critical to ensure the proper functionality of the final parts. In recent years, there has been a remarkable surge in the number of industries and applications adopting laser micromachining and new advancements in laser sources, machines, components and software are required. We invite the whole supply chain to learn about these new solutions related with laser micromachining and discuss with integrators and end-users their needs and challenges for the future.

Speakers

Maik Frede (CEO) has about 20 years of experience in laser development. He studied technical physics in Münster and received his PhD in Physics from the University of Hanover. After his PhD, he worked at the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. and was leading the solid-state photonics group. Diode pumped solid-state lasers are the area of expertise and beside lasers for gravitational wave detection he developed space-born lasers and high-power industrial laser systems. Maik Frede published about 200 scientific publications, further for his work in the area of gravitational wave detection he received the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the OSA’s Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award in 2016 and nominated for the Photonics100 in 2024. As VP of Engineering at AMS Technologies he is now responsible for the research and development of customized optical and thermal solutions.

Chris has spent 20 years working in the fiber and optical component industry, including time at Fujitsu Quantum Devices. Since 2014 he has also worked in micromachining, tailoring solutions to meet customer requirements. Strangely, Chris likes nothing better than to be in a tight spot in some deep dark cave.

Head of Business Development at Optek Systems

Benjamin Bernard (Team Lead – Senior Application Engineer) spent the early part of his career as a laser application engineer for ultra-short pulse manufacturing at Spectra-Physics. After this, he joined Infineon Technologies, where he worked as a process engineer for various laser-based unit process steps along the semiconductor process chain. Since 2022, he has been working at DISCO with a main focus on laser separation, plasma dicing, and grinding.

Team Lead –Senior Application Engineer at DISCO

Vincent Rouffiange (VP, Strategic Business Development) is leading strategic business development initiatives at Amplitude. With over 16 years of experience at the company, Vincent previously served as Vice President of Sales for 11 years, overseeing global sales development and being a key member of the executive committee. His tenure at Amplitude includes roles as Sales and Marketing Manager, where he was instrumental in expanding the company’s international presence. Prior to joining Amplitude, Vincent worked at APEX Technologies as Sales & Marketing Manager for nearly 5 years, focusing on global sales strategies and marketing efforts.

VP, Strategic Business Development at Amplitude Laser

Roland A. Terborg (Project Lead) graduated in Physics from the UNAM - Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and developed the Lateral-shear Interferometric Microscopy (LIM) technology during his PhD at ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. His work was recognized with the CERCA Pioneer 2019 Thesis Award. With over 10 years of dedicated R&D experience in LIM and its applications, Roland possesses deep technical expertise in quantitative phase imaging and optical metrology. He has complemented his scientific knowledge with entrepreneurship training, enabling him to lead ShinePhi, an ICFO-incubated spinoff, towards commercializing the LIM technology. Over the past five years, Roland has spearheaded ShinePhi's business development and strategic planning, translating this cutting-edge technology into a market-ready solution for critical inspection challenges in the semiconductor and photonics industries.

Project Lead at ShinePhi

Lars Eng (CEO) has been Silicon Light Machines’ Chief Executive Officer since October 2011. He joined the company in 2005 and has held positions as Senior Director of Systems Engineering and Vice president of Engineering and Business development. Dr. Eng brings to the job more than 15 years of designing and delivering optical and electronic components and subsystems to the telecommunications, industrial, and consumer markets. Prior to joining Silicon Light Machines, Dr. Eng held engineering director positions at Finisar and AT&T Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies. He holds a PhD in applied physics from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, and an MS in electrical engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
