EPIC Technology Meeting on Photonics for Quantum Technologies at Fraunhofer HHI

Photonics is the backbone of quantum technologies, from single-photon sources and integrated photonic circuits to ultra-low-loss fiber links, detectors, and lasers. By 2026, the priority will be scalable manufacturing, hybrid integration, cryogenic compatibility, and supply chain readiness to move quantum from lab prototypes to deployable products. This meeting will address the challenges and opportunities in building reliable, manufacturable photonic platforms for quantum communication, sensing, and computing.

Hosted by Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin, the event will connect system developers, component suppliers, and end-users to discuss real industrial needs, technology gaps, and partnership opportunities. The focus will be on European leadership in quantum photonics, fostering collaborations that can accelerate commercialization and strengthen the competitiveness of the European supply chain.

Amin Abbasi (Business Manager) received his PhD degrees in ultra-high-speed directly modulated DFB lasers from Ghent University/imec in 2016. He continued his research at imec/UGent on 100 Gb/s single-channel EAM modulators until 2017. He joined AntwerpSpace/OHB as Photonic Team Leader on microwave photonics applications. Dominic Schulz (Head of Photonics) has almost 15 years of experience in the field of photonics. Fraunhofer HHI offers various services and solutions related to quantum technologies, like QKD systems or components for quantum sensing. Dominic received the M.Eng. degree in communications engineering from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, Germany, in 2012, and the Ph.D. degree from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, in 2019. In 2012, he joined the Department of Photonic Networks and Systems at Fraunhofer HHI, where he worked in the field of optical wireless communications. His research interests included the development of high data rate systems for wireless access and research towards short-range outdoor backhaul links for small radio cells and wireless-to-the-home. He led several national as well as international research projects and was developing optical wireless systems together with partners from industry. From 2020 onwards he was responsible for the research and development of the optical wireless communication topic and was deputy head of group at Fraunhofer HHI. After completing his MBA at RWTH Aachen University in 2021, he now heads the Strategy Photonics group at Fraunhofer HHI, where he is responsible for business development, strategy and marketing for all photonic departments.

Elvis Wan (PIC Packaging Lead) received his Professional Doctorate in Engineering degree from Eindhoven University of Technology, with strong focus on process development and optimization. Before he relocated to the Netherlands, he finished his Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Hong Kong. He joined PhotonFirst in 2016. Specializing in photonic chip packaging, Elwis excels in process setup, optimization, and project management. He leads key work packages in the PIXAPP project, aimed at standardizing photonic chip packaging technologies. Elwis is adept at designing demonstrator packages for fiber sensing applications and evaluating external packaging requests. His expertise lies in bringing together equipment and machinery, optimizing production processes, and managing projects effectively.

Eric Mounier (Chief Analyst) is Fellow Analyst at Yole Group (Yole), with more than 25+ years of experience within the semiconductor industry. He has a strong technical profile built by his experience in both academia and industry of new materials, optoelectronics and semiconducting. During the last 10 years, he grew professionally in the technical environment of photonic technologies and complemented it with important experience in microelectronic production. Ivan has developed projects covering a wide range of applications, such as detectors and wearables, image sensors and integrated photonics, high-speed and high-power electronics, thin-film materials and in-line metrology. He has developed various processes for wafer-scale material production and characterization, wafer-level device testing, innovative device concepts and demonstrators.
Jerome Prieur (President & CEO) has over 20 years of experience leading companies in photonics, lasers, and optical fiber communication systems. Previously, Jerome served as Vice President of Sales at VPIsystems and as Director of Sales North America at Photonis and SmartQuantum. Mathias Kaschel (Scientific Researcher) is the head of the Silicon Photonics business unit and the New Semiconductor Devices division at IMS CHIPS. His research topics during and after his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering covered Silicon-Germanium photodiodes and Silicon Photonics. In 2014 he joined IMS CHIPS to enable an integrated photonics line and new MEMS applications. As of now, the business unit consists of integrated photonics, GaN power devices, flexible electronics and assembly and packaging and focuses on quantum sensing and computing as well as life sciences and medical products.
